How to get published - Part II

Self publishing is a term which covers all manner of ills. There is quite a wide degree of quality when it comes to self published books, but the sad truth is most are poorly written, poorly edited (if edited at all) and fail to achieve the literary dreams of the author.

The biggest issue that I see with self published books is that they are rushed. The writer has not taken the time to carefully check his/her work. I could catalogue all the issues that can crop up for the hasty self publisher but you probably already know them.

The biggest concern for me is just how many books are published without any form of editing. An editor goes beyond a simple spelling and grammar check. He/she should examine the book in terms of plot and character arc, pacing and readability as well as generally proofing and correcting errors.

Essentially, a good editor will make the author look smarter than he/she is.

Of course, a good editor is not cheap. However, if your interest in writing is to only have something 'out there' and you are not concerned about your long term prospects as a writer, then okay. But if you are serious, and hope to build a career, then an editor is not a luxury, but a vital component of your writing process, and the cost, whatever it is, must be budgeted for.

I have had experiences with editors that left me cold. An editor who merely spell checks is no good. Or one who insists you rewrite so that you lose your 'voice' is equally bad. What you need is an editor who takes the time to understand your story (that means reading it) can discuss plot holes that you have missed and help resolve them, ensure that you do not waffle endlessly, no matter how fascinating you might think it is, and generally tighten up the story so that it moves in a compelling manner from one scene to the next, always leaving the reader wanting more.

A tall order, which is why you must vet your editor carefully.

But once you and your editor have managed to beat the manuscript into a very credible state (you should be able to hold it up against similar, traditionally published books without embarrassment) then what comes next?

Self publish or Trad?
